Facilities include buildings and civil engineering works and their associated siteworks. Civil engineering works, or infrastructure facilities, are construction works comprising a structure, such as a dam, bridge, road, railway, runway, utilities, pipeline, or sewerage system, or are the result of operations such as dredging, earthwork, and geotechnical processes.
A facility has a life cycle, including planning, design, construction, maintenance, operation, and removal phases The design and construction phases are typically performed as part of a project. There may be multiple such projects during the life cycle of the facility to enable phased construction and incremental improvement.
